WALL SPACE GALLERY is proud to present Dominique Normand’s latest collection of abstract-figurative paintings and monoprints reflecting her adaptation to her new reality living in Ecuador. After years of exploring her own Metis roots and celebrating the spirit and wilderness of the Canadian North, Normand merges her past with influences from the living culture of Indigenous peoples of South America and the spirits of Ecuador’s Sierra Mountains. She turns to mysticism, spirituality, and the ‘sacred feminine’ to grapple with the upheaval of her new surroundings and tides of change.

Normand's large canvases represent this integration, capturing the spirits of Ecuador's sierra mountains as they emerge from fragmented lands and pathways. This body of work is not merely an escape but a mythical questioning of the meaning, intention, and intuition behind each painting. Figures in motion and abstract cartography suggest a guide through chaotic times, revealing the magic and unresolved mystery of her creative journey.

Normand's experiences participating in ceremonies and rituals of the Indigenous peoples of South America has deepened her connection with the spiritual and cultural traditions of the new found world she explores. These experiences inspired her series "13 Grandmother Moons,” which delves into the sacred feminine.

In “TALKS WIH RELATIONS“, Normand’s canvas exudes liveliness and growth – hot yellow, blue and purple flora expand into a patterned environment across the background. This environment hosts blooming red flowers, centered on the canvas and encircled by a translucent
moon-like circle. A figure, with back turned, gazes towards their rich, unfolding forms. For Normand, each moon represents a different aspect of womanhood, spirituality, or a connection to the earth.

The integration of the sacred feminine in her work suggests a celebration of the power, wisdom, and nurturing qualities traditionally associated with women, as well as a reverence for the natural cycles that govern life. Her paintings likely serve as a visual homage to these values, inviting viewers to consider their own relationships with the world and the spiritual forces that shape it.

For Normand, this series captures beauty but also carries deep cultural and spiritual significance. The paintings use vibrant colors, symbolic imagery, and incorporate elements from the ceremonies she participated in; offering a bridge between her personal experiences and the universal themes she explores.

We look forward to welcoming you for the reception on Saturday, October 26 @ 3 - 5 pm.

Dominique Normand celebrates the beauty of Wilderness and its true Spirit. Her strong, visceral bond with native culture has led her to inquire and research through her roots on her father’s side. The region of Montmagny was a frequent passage for the Nomadic
Malicet and Mi’kmaq Natives of Eastern Quebec and New Brunswick. In 2012, she
discovered she is Metis of Maliseet descent.

Normand’s work has been showcased in many solo and group exhibitions such as 11 Nations cultural center, Galerie Richelieu in Montréal, Saint Adolphe's Manifest'Art in the Laurentians, Montmagny's Rendez-Vous Ononthio, Broadway Gallery in New York, Westin Hotel in Los Angeles, Soutana Galerie and Jardin d'Hiver in Mont Tremblant, art galleries in Montebello, St-Jovite, Saint Sauveur, Piedmont, Horse Show Classique de Blainville and many more. Normand currently lives in Vilcabamba, Ecuador.
